Espirito Santo was originally a very heavy “afro-esk” sounding track when I was given the project by my good homie Stephen Rigmaiden. His mix of the track is just bonkers. It has a pretty much completely percussive sound (minus the vocal pitch by Andy London). A very interesting thing about Stephen’s mix is the melodies are still percussive based, just about.

You also have mixes by Folarin Tallman (another Soso Deep Records artists) and the infamous Koro. Koro as some may now, is an alias for African house master, Boddhi Satva. Both of there mixes digging deep with that late night club sound.

That brings me to my mixes, my “Fremont Dub” and my traditional “Baby Powder” touch.

The Fremont Dub was my take on spinning through the sound that Stephen Rigmaiden had originally thrown at me. I wanted to make sure there was a good dance-able heavily percussive series of back side poly rhythms. Accompanied by a primarily percussive based and uplifting melody. For the most part, I’m happy what I ended up with considering its really not my particular style of house that poors out of my soul.

My “Baby Powder” dub was very much a conscious journey in which I sat down at the piano to try and create a melody that would help shape the rest of the track. Falling suit to my favorite broken back beat rhythms while track to keep a nice syncopated ride for the dance floor. Did it work? Maybe, maybe not… but i like the way the tracks arrangement evolves and carries out accompanied by my selected “dub-esk” format of Andy London’s vox.

Yup, pretty much sums up where we are going with Atjazz remix . Song is dope, really tastefully done, Jazzanova has always done a great job with good warm melodies. I find, as a dancer, melodies that are very warm and almost “rising” tend to generate thoughts of movement in my head. Working with the insertion of to many dissonant sounds interrupts the thought of movement, at least in my head. Often times in jazz music a good composition will make use of both, Jazzanova tends to really hit home on what is a “movement” sound for me. This even occurs whether the track is down tempo or uptempo, it doesn’t hurt that he always a great back beat as well.

Atjazz seems to tastefully simplify the song, lessening the message of the vocals and simplifying the melodic arrangement. All at the same time making for a very complex and wonderfully building dance track. He also, in classic Atjazz fashion, through down on an even more constructive and powerful back beat. The backbeat is something I can REALLY lay into:

I’m not sure if Baba has a special place in my heart but man I have missed seeing this guy dance. The last time I was in Paris (2010), i didn’t even see him at the club, it feels like forever since I have seen him cut loose. In my time spent educating my self on dance he has been one of my favorite dancers since maybe 2005/2006ish. I think this video showed that, just like a fine wine, time can do some amazing things to the flavor of a dancer.

Of the four, everyone seemed to start there round with an “on switch”, like…”bang! and there off – Kapela jumps into the lead…followed by Serge and Mamson fighting for 3rd”. Before you say it!!!….no that’s now how I ranked them lol…I’m just trying to be funny (prob. a fail), again i wasn’t a judge so….yeah.

Case in point, watch the clip again for a second time and really sit back in your chair. Turn up the music and let the energy of the song and dance play out. Take a breath in between each dancers round and reset your attention span. Watch what Baba comes up with. To me it was beautiful, simply beautiful. To put out that type of connectedness and capture what he did in that type of setting, man – that’s more than I could accomplish at this point in my dance life – fa sho. My hats off to the Wanted family, Serial Stepperz and everyone that made it to the big stage in JD this year. JD is teaching the world a piece about our culture and showing that our art should be appreciated on the same level as any other.

It was fun, as always, gettin our session on. We even shot a little commercial, which is not out yet. It should be hella funny (at least I hope). This video just speaks loads to how thankful I am for the life I have led and the people that are in it. It takes alot of influence/inspiration to make a human being who they are. What defines me is a direct reflection of so many amazing people I have grown close to, in turn the people close to them.

If we could all just dance and love music the same – this world would be just a bit better than it already is

My current music digg, or “Track of the Week” has to be Robert Glasper’s new album Black Radio. From beginning to end it engages you with a unique blend of sonics, melody and stand out featured artists. If you are unaware of who Robert Glasper is, let me save you some time –> RG on Wikipedia. RG is currently on a tour with “The Robert Glasper Experiment“, which I have yet to see. With the release of his new album, I can only assume they are traveling doing what songs they can with what artists they can but as well playing great interpretations of quality music both new and old. What brought me to Robert Glasper was not due to digging. I actually heard his name bounce around when friends would talk about some of the talented artists in the “future of American jazz music”. Since hearing his name, I spent a bit of time listening to his previous 4 albums, all fantastic – but when I say a bit of time, I really didn’t give a good ear to the entirety of the music. I would pick out songs here and there, which all sounded like fantastic instrumentalists pieces. So then I started you tubing, that’s when I became a fan. I realized the man I was watching was the outspoken musician that I had heard/seen offer up bold comments on various jazz documentaries. Its hard when ‘digging’ through instrumental based music, especially non ‘dance’ music, to really allow something to reach out and grab you. Myself, being a music lover, but a dancer, I generally find it hard to settle down in my listening. Allow things to sync in, ya know? As I have gotten older and my dance has become more colorful and to accompany, so has my ear for music. With that said, my patience as well as pace has changed dramatically. This is the youtube clip that started it for me:

Whats funny is this song had been on a previous album or two (a rendition that is) that I had heard of RG. Was it the way that they played that day, or maybe it was the Rhodes? You know I love me some RHODES, haha! No, what I think i became infatuated with was the dancing of his fingertips. I was seeing true beauty in the music through the movement of his hands. Not to take away from the rest of the rhythm section, the entire piece was incredible. I think though that It was this video that turned me into a fan.

So, now we briefly discuss “Black Radio” – the latest creation from RG. First off, I screwed up when I downloaded it off of Amazon and started listening to the album backwards. Which with this type of album wasn’t such a bad idea. The first track which I listened to was a sonic rendition of Nirvana’s “Smells like Teen Spirit”. I know what your thinking, but its Nirvana…recognize. This of course was the intended last track on the album, but WOW – what a way to start up – in retrospect a fantastic finale hahaha! Going through you hear amazing leads from artists like Ledisi, Lalah Hathoway, Bilal, Mos Def, Musiq Soulchild and Erykah Badu. With names like that you expect great tunes and you get what you pay for, believe me. I think; however, that Teen Spirit still remains on the top pick for me personally. Surprisingly my runner up was lead by Mint Condition’s lead singer “Stokley Williams”. Say whaaaat? Mint Condition… oh yes its baby makin’ time! Basically this song, titled “Why do we try”, comes in with the sound of mint condition (Stokley) leading the charge. There is no mistaken with the vocal timing and tone, you know the mans voice. The backing rhythm from the drums just burns a whole in it. It is begging me to dance, but hey maybe that’s just my twisted ear.

Dedan – man, what more is there to say about him. A dancer at heart and wonderful music selector, he has had a long running (with small breaks in between) party called “Brothers and Sisters”. I can’t tell you how many times I either listened or dance the mid-week nights away at that party. Dedan is good people, always for good conversation and is what I consider an original; still around and kickin’ in todays times for good dance music.

Wazir – another dancer that is nothing but good feelings and positive energy. Whether by listening to his music selection or watching him bug out on the dance floor (gotta be the right night and right feeling though), you can see where the true dance music club culture comes from. He is a rooted human being and I am blessed to have spent many nights vibing with the dude.

and last but not least…

Cecil – someone I consider a good friend and someone I look to for insight on sound and nerd filled conversation. A closest dance enthusiast and an up and coming production mega man. Ok so here we go:

Dance cannot be owned. Dance is not an “item”; therefore, it cannot be sold, borrowed or even stolen. That’s right I said it, it cannot be STOLEN! “Nom-Nom-Nom, QUIT BITIN’ ME SHUN!” Those very words that I have heard SOOO many times, hold no truth. Sure you can create a series of movements but how did you create those movements? First you had to learn a series of movements you didn’t make up? Am I right? Okay there are so many angles to argue here but at least lets take a step back from the ego angle of “get your own shit!“. Don’t get me wrong it urks the shit out of me to see someone blatantly take an entire set or perfect specifics of someone’s style. But lets face it, this is what pushes concepts and originality farther. The conscious acceptance of being inspired and being able to learn is crucial to the art of music and dance. As a dancer for many years I can say I don’t take dance classes to learn how to dance. I take dance classes to learn how to further my ability in dance. Even when I started dancing, the very beginnings of me taking a ‘class’ or learning from someone wasn’t them teaching me to dance rather giving me some tools to work with. As much love and respect I have for all of my direct teachers, the club has taught me more about dance than they ever have. My teachers just showed me how to respect the dance and music (very vital for a REAL freestyle dancer).

Nothing is new, really its not. Everything is learned through observation, inspiration or direct education. Even some of the most unique dancers out there will put you on some kind of game. Meaning they will tell you about something with respect to OGs, original influences, people that made a difference in their life etc. Everyone came from somewhere, no one just appeared out of thin air and neither did your air flair combo or stomach isolation.

Signature steps/moves vs. Style:

Without a doubt signatures or staples have been laid down time and time again in dance. One amazing dancer’s signature step might be the decoration of their respect style, while another dancer uses that signature step as an element of his foundation. The foundation necessary to create his style (I say his but it could also be a ‘her’, please don’t hate ). For example in NY house dance, one of the foundational steps that is often taught is the “skate” or “train”. These specific elements of foot-working/leg-working look nothing like their original style of ‘mimicking’ quad/disco skaters. Sure people can identify with how they came about and even understand the reasoning behind the movement, but now what? It would seem originally someones whole style has become a foundational element for NY house. Would it be incorrect to say that someone could learn various other foundational elements of NY house dance and develop a style without learning the skate? I think so, its also safe to say that someone could really base the foundation of their style on one move/step or I guess inspiration depending on how you look at it. One of my favorite dancers, Rashaad from Assassins, once pointed out to me that “foundation is what your teacher has taught you”. Sometimes teachers come in the form of a music video, or a big brother/sister, not always does someone get the master and disciple relationship. The point, I think, is each person’s foundation is different and perhaps that foundation has a mixture of other ‘key elements’ from which it came from. My take away from Rashaad is that you don’t have to have the same step or groove everyone else has to be able to dance with style.

Real dancers and musicians want music and dance to live on:

Why should anyone be afraid to give up all the secrets of what makes them great? One of the greatest things you can do as an artist in any art form is help move things along and never let the art die. I think a lot of people are scared that by giving up ‘the goods’ they may never be recognized as a great. Well shit, if I can ever reach what I would consider mastery with ANYTHING I do in art, I will be great (I don’t care who recognizes it)! Lifetimes are needed to become a master, lucky for me there has been MANY, many life times in dance and music prior to my existence. This means there is still hope for me yet

Dance cannot be owned, it must be operated:

You have to work with dance, nothing you do is yours, whether you ACTUALLY invented it or not. Let the flow of what you know and feel create your dance. Don’t get hung up on if someone else did it or is doing it or is gonna’ do it. Just get yours, do you, dance should be expression. I promise that the truly dope shit you ‘create’ you will never be able to do again if you really get down and dance. Also as a general disclaimer, my outlook on this subject is very focused around freestyle dance. I don’t want to draw conclusions in avenues of dance in which I do not think much about, like choreography or production shows. Not saying anything negative about choreo, just saying performance is a whole different mentality and thought process from where I was going with this.

I leave you with this. Two greats, maybe the greatest of great – Sammy and Gregory Hines discussing tap on ABC news. Normally a clip that you would watch for the dance and I’m sure this is why the media chose to interview them to begin with; you end up with some powerful and inspirational thoughts about dance/music and the art of tap.
