Soulebrity: All-Style Cypher Contest: $600 PRIZE!

SOULebrity was created by Flo-Ology in 2003. The first all-styles event in which the bays own Gary Kendall (Jabbawockeez), Kool Raul (Beats N Peices) and Jamar Township were the cypher champs.

All-Style Cypher Contest

This is a gathering for dancers of all styles to share the cypher to an eclectic assortment of fresh beats (house, hip hop, breaks, funk…..and more).

The Cypher Battle Breakdown:
-Invited hosts will inspire and dance with all contestants. After a one hour cypher 9 dancers will be selected.
-The top 9 will then dance with the hosts in a final cypher.
-Each host will award $200 to one of the finalist; therefore the possibility of 3 winners. If all 3 hosts select the same dancer, that dancer wins the full $600!!

We are proud to host the only US National Qualifier for both categories of Popping and Locking in San Francisco, CA. We are expecting dancers Nationwide to come and participate at a chance to represent United States in the one of the World’s Most Prestigious Urban Dance Events which takes place annually in South Korea.

Brian Green is one of the worlds foremost respected masters in this dance. His background includes many different dance forms from classical to street. He had his ballet training at the age of 9 from Alvin Ailey. Tap dance from Phil Black. His commercial hiphop background spans decades. Dancing for Missy Elliot to Mariah Carey to 2001 choreographer of the year for his work with MYA. Brian was in NYC club’s scene and street dance scene from a young age studying many great dancers. From this experience he studied and documented many of the foundation of the vocabulary of what the world now knows as “House Dance”
He has traveled the world and taught and spread this dance. Come learn from one of the undisputed living legend of this dance.

Over the years, Cecil has etched his aesthetic into the consciousness of Bay area dancers and music fanatics. Since his days tagging along on crate digging missions with Dedan…to his famed residency at Bembe…and now with his sweat inducing sets at thePeople…who can remember a month that went by without Cecil rocking his signature blend of soulful, deep, and cutting edge sounds.

Now, this same sensibility is flowing through a growing catalog of remixes and original productions that are quickly turning Cecil into a fixture on the world dance music stage. It happens to be Cecil’s birth month. But, if it wasn’t, we would have made up an excuse to feature a special set by him including live vocal performances of some his latest collaborations by Maya Songbird, Mike Baker, and Siaira Shawn.

We could go on about the famous djs he’s played alongside from Osunlade, to Louis Vega, to Carl Craig. We could talk about his now legendary Felabration sets at Recess or describe the euphoria Cecil creates with his marathon sets at prestigious dance battles. We could talk about his underground remixing habits like his irresistible rerub of Little Dragon’s “Twice”. Or we could talk about his releases on Deepblak and Ocha records alongside heavy hitters like Osunlade, Erik Rico, and Boddhi Satva. But, instead of flapping our gums, we’ll let the music speak.

The Strength In Flavor All Styles Dance Battle is the first ever street dance contest on Blu-Ray with the world’s best dancers expertly shot and edited from a four camera shoot in HD video. The All Styles Dance Battle took place in San Francisco as part of the event Strength In Flavor –

Scion Dance Week. The Scion-sponsored dance week honored Hip Hop History Month and was kicked off by a series of lectures and classes by the legends of the culture including Kool Herc, Zulu Gremlin, Cros1, and Mestre Urubu Malandro. The week culminated in an all styles dance competition held at The DNA Lounge for a $2,000 prize, and was celebrated that night at an after party at Temple Nightclub hosted by Zulu Nation with a performance by the “Godfather” of Hip Hop DJ Kool Herc. The Blu-Ray & DVD includes all of the battles. The Blu-Ray comes with special extras including interviews and judges showcases.

Soulidify was created out of a desire to bridge the gaps between the many styles of dance out there. It stemmed from the inspiration of going to Club Shelter at Hubbert St. in 1997-98. It was amazing how so many styles of dance were getting loose in the same circle with the most amazing energy. It was like a feeding frenzy of dancers feeding off of each other. African dancers, tap, bboys, house, ballet. So many people just plain and simply getting loose. It was a camaraderie that I was not used to in the bay at that time. Souldify was an attempt to try and bring that feeling to the bay….

ABOUT BRIAN

Brian Green a.k.a. “Footwork,” choreographer, teacher, and dancer, began dancing at 8 years old. He studied Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Modern, and African for five years from Phil Black, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, and Joefrreys Ballet.

Brian in his career has choreographed or danced with artists like Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefanie, Fergie, MYA, Foxy Brown, Missy Eliott, Salt-N-Pepa, Busta Rhymes, Barbara Tucker, EVE, Kraze, MAW (Masters at Work), and many more. In the last 10 years, his teaching has focused on the history of dances in the Funk, Hip-hop, and House culture, which he has spread through the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Africa. In these countries he has been a judge for countless dance contests, promoting the true art, culture, and essence of these dances!

He is the 2001 ACA (American Choreographers Awards) recipient for Best Hip-Hop Choreography in a Music Video for his choreography in the video called, “FREE” by the artist called, MYA! He has created a new company, WORLD SOUL ( www.23prime.com/worldsoul), which has focused on showing audiences the passion, history, and various techniques that are in various dance styles. He has also created a dance edutaining event that has been sweeping NY and spreading around the world called the House Dance Conference ( www.myspace.com/housedanceconferen… & www.housedanceconference.com)! He is also one of the Foundation Team Members and Faculty of Red Bull’s educational yearly event called RED BULL BEATRIDERS ( www.redbullbeatriders.com)
